William John Miller was born on 5 Apr 1884 (baptised 8 Nov 1885) in Tring to Charles Miller, groom, and Hannah (nee Halsey).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Hubert (born 1878), Alice (born 1879), William, Stanler (born 1887) and Gertrude (born 1890) were living at 5 Charles Street, Tring.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William (smith), Stanley (house boy) and Gertrude were still living at 5 Charles Street.
The 1911 Census had the family of Parents William and Gertrude were at 5, Charles Street.
He married Violet Maud Waters in Berkhamsted District in late 1914.
Wartime Service
No Service record was found for William. He was enlisted in the Army Ordnance Corps as Private 023941 in Oct 1916 and was posted to 118 Company.
He went to France at some time in 1917 and little is known of his work there (Army Ordnance provide the weapons, ammunition, etc.) He contracted pneumonia following influenza and died on 3 Mar 1919 at No 2 South African General Hospital, Abbeville.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £13 10 and arrears of £16 7s 7d was paid to his widow Violet. Brother Stanley served in Royal Bucks Hussars in Gallipoli and Palestine and died of wounds on 12 Jun 1917.
