Pre War

Son of George and Sarah (nee WARREN) MILLER; husband of Emily Martha (nee DANCER) MILLER of Watford.

His parents married 28 February 1866 at St Pancras Old Church, London. George died 1929 in Watford aged 87, and was buried 29 May in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Sarah died 1929 in Watford aged 85, and was buried 11 June, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Frederick was born 2 May 1879 in Forest Hill, London, and attended Victoria Boys’ School, Watford, from 21 October 1889.  He married 1914 in the Watford district [despite claiming to have been married 12 years on the 1911 Census], and resided in Watford; they had two children. Emily remarried 1924 in the Watford district to Sydney HORSWELL, she died 1944 in Watford aged 68, and was buried 2 January 1945 in North Watford Cemetery.

On the 1881 Census, aged 3 he lived in Forest Hill, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1891 Census, aged 12, he lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1901 Census, a house decorator aged 21, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1911 Census, a decorator aged 33, he still lived in Watford, with his wife and three children.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford at the beginning of the war and went out to the Front in January 1915; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 4 January 1915, and died of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

There is an article about and a Death announcement for Frederick in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 22 May 1915; and a caption to a photograph in the Watford Illustrated dated 12 June 1915. Unfortunately, Frederick’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War.
