Pre War
Alfred Leonard MILLER was born in Bramfield, Hertfordshire, in 1872, son of John Miller a Gamekeeper and Maryann Miller (nee Dunn). One of their four children.
He was Baptised on 25th August 1872, in Bramfield, Herts.
1881 Census records Alfred aged 8, at school, living with his parents, sister’s Ann (12), Ruth 7) and brother John (10), at Green Hill, Bramfield, Herts.
1891 Census records Alfred (18) and brother John (20) as Lodging with Widow Mary Monk and her son at 15 Hertingfordbury Road, St Andrews, Hertford, Herts. Both brothers are employed as Coach Body Makers.
Between 1891 and 1911 Alfred travelled to London and enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery and issued with the service number 186.
Alfred married Jessie Caroline Stratford in 1907, the marriage was registered on Ongar, Essex. They went on to have two children, Vera Violet Jessie Miller, born in November 1908, and Gladys Florence Ada Miller born in late 1910.
1911 Census records Alfred aged 38, a (Smith) Sergeant with 55th Company, Royal Garrison Artillery, stationed at Grand Casement Barracks, in Gibraltar. His wife Jessie and his two children Vera and Gladys 6 months, who was born in Gibraltar, are living with him.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Alfred was still a serving soldier with the Royal Garrison Artillery with the Rank of Staff Sergeant (Smith). Alfred died at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, Kent on 2nd July 1915.
His wife Jessie died in Hoo, Kent in December 1915, it is believed their two children were looked after by their Grandmother Emma Stratford, of Lower Stoke, Nr. Rochester, Kent
Additional Information
His effects of £13-03s-09d, pay owing were split, £4-04s-07d, to Mrs Emma Stratford and £8-09s-02d, to the O S Bank. His war gratuity of £10, was also split £2-02s-11d, to Mrs Emma Stratford and £7-17s-01, to the O S Bank.
Mrs Emma Stratford (Guardian) of Lower Stoke, nr. Rochester, Kent, was awarded 5/- a week pension from 3rd January 1916, for the children. Believed to be their grandmother.
