Pre War

On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Herbert (born 1878), Alice (born 1879), William (born 1884), Stanley and Gertrude (born 1890) were living at 5, Charles Street, Tring.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William, Stanley (a house boy) and Gertrude were still living at Charles Street.


On the 1911 Census Sidney’s parents were still at 5, Charles Street together with William and Gertrude.

Wartime Service

Stanley enlisted in B Squadron 1/1st Bucks Hussars on 10 Aug 1914 as Private 1034 at Aylesbury.  No Service Record was found for Stanley.


In Sep 1914 the Bucks Hussars were part of 2nd Mounted Division and went to Egypt  Stanley and the Division went to Egypt in Apr 1915 and were landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli in Aug 1915 as dismounted cavalry taking part in operations as Infantry. They were evacuated to Egypt in Dec 1915 and in Jan 1916 became 6 Mounted Division, then in Feb 1917 Imperial Mounted Division. Stanley had been promoted to Acting Sergeant at some time. During this period there were various engagements in defence of Turkish attacks on the Suez Canal. Stanley was wounded, probably around Jun 1917 and although treated for his wounds and died on12 Jun 1917.

War Gratuity of £14 and arrears of £5 1s 10d to his father, £11 13s 4d to his mother and £2 6s 4d to his sister in law Violet (widow of William).His elder brother William John served with Army Ordnance Corps and died of pneumonia on 3 Mar 1919
