Frederick Millard was born in 1894 in Stotfold, Beds., on to James Millard, a chalk digger, and Minnie (nee Wilshere).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Herbert Wilshere (born 1882), Minnie (born 1886),Annie(born 1888), Florence J (born 1890)were living at Dark Lane , Stotfold, Beds.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Annie (born 1888), Florence (born 1890), Albert (born 1892) and Frederick were living at Dark Lane, Stotfold, Beds.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Albert (bricklayer’s labourer), Frederick (houseboy), Maude (born 1898), Victor (born 1900), James (born 1902) and Ruby (born 1907) were living at 144, Common View, Letchworth.


He is reported to have worked for Messrs Dents.


His mother later lived at 368, Icknield Way, Letchworth, Herts.

Wartime Service

Frederick may have enlisted in the 1st Battalion about 1912 as a Territorial Soldier (his service number was issued in 1911/12) about when he reached 18 years. Frederick went to France with the 1st Battalion, having volunteerd for Foreign Service, joining 4th (Guards) Brigade at Ypres. In 1914 they may have taken part in the 1st Battle of Ypres (19 Oct-22 Nov),in 1915 the Battle of Festubert (15-25 May) and Loos (25 Sep-8 Oct).


On 19 Aug 1915 the Battalion became part of 6 Brigade in 2 Division.


On 19 Feb 1916 they transferred to 118 Brigade, 39 Division and took part in Battles of the Somme at  Thiepval (26-28 Sep) and Ancre Heights (1 Oct-11 Nov). It was in this last action that Frederick was wounded and died on 4 Oct 1916.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £9 and arrears of £16 14s 4d was paid to his mother.


Brother Herbert Wilsher, (Mil records) served with 1st Bedford as Cpl 3/5650 in France from 11 Sep 1914 , killed in action on 11 Jul 1915.
