Pre War

Born in 1894 in Standon, son of Elijah and Caroline Anne Miles. In 1901 they are living in Standon and his father is described as a horse dealer. By 1911 Horace has already joined the army and is listed as a musician with the Wiltshires in South Africa. He must have joined up as a boy soldier, or falsified his age. From his service number he may well have joined up in late 1908.

His father died in 1913, and maybe his mother had moved away, and perhaps that is why his name does not appear on Standon Memorial.

Wartime Service

Said to have enlisted at Devizes, but I cannot find out why. Arrived in France August 1914. His DCM listed in London Gazette 14.01.1916 page 606 New Year List.
