Frederick William (sometimes known as William Frederick) Miles was born in 1893 in Buntingford, Herts, the son of John and Annie Elizabeth (known as Annie or Elizabeth) Miles, and baptised on 23 April 1893 at nearby Layston, Herts.
On the 1901 Census the family were living in cottages at Cat Hill, East Barnet where his father was a labourer for the District Council. Frederick gave his address on enlistment as 1 Cat Hill, East Barnet
His mother later lived at 197 Lancaster Road, New Barnet. Herts, then Park View Cottages, Barnet.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Sittingbourne, Kent, and initially served at home from 1 October 1914 as a Private with the Middlesex Regiment/Army Service Corps (under reg. no. 238079), later transferring to the Royal Field Artillery as a Driver serving with 262nd Brigade. He was sent to Salonica in January 1917, followed by Egypt on 6 September 1917.
On 18 October 1918 Frederick was admitted to the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria, dangerously ill with malaria. He died there on 25 October 1918, aged 26, and is buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £18 10s and pay owing of £16 19s 10d. Pension cards exist with his mother as dependant but do not show if a pension was awarded.
