Pre War
Charles Miles was born in Puller Road, Boxmoor, Herts, in 1883, the only son of Charles and Eliza Miles.
On the 1891 Census the family was living at 102 St John's Road, Hemel Hempstead where his father was working as a Labourer at the Paper Mill. They remained at the same address in 1901 at which time his father was working as a Bricklayer's Labourer and Charles was a Card maker at the Paper Mill.
By 1911 the family had moved to 136 Carlyle Avenue, Willesden, London and both Charles and his father were working as General Labourers.
They later lived at 115 Carlyle Avenue, Stonebridge Park, Willesden, London, NW10.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted in Mill Hill, Middlesex and initially joined the Middlesex Regiment under Reg. no. 2475, later transferring to the East Surrey Regiment.
He was initially listed as missing and later confirmed as killed in action on 3 May 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £4 and pay owing of £2 1s 11d. His mother received a pension of 12 shillings a week.
