James Henry Mileham was born in 1877 in Norwich, Norfolk, the son and eldest child of James and Mary Mileham. He was baptised on 12 November 1882 at the Church of St Simon and St Jude in Norwich, along with brothers William and Robert.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 8 Gaffers Buildings, Heigham, Norfolk, where his father was working as a brewer's labourer. (name mistranscribed as Mitcham)
He married Gertrude May Gatward in 1909 and on the 1911 Census they were living at High Street, Buntingford, with children James H Mileham (3 months) and William Gatward, aged 3. James was then working as a horsekeeper on a farm. Sadly son James died later in 1911, aged 1 year. A daughter Lilian was born in 1914.
His widow later lived at Tannis Court, Aspenden, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Bedford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 8th Battalion in France.
He was killed in action on 17 April 1917, aged 31, but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His widow Gertrude received a war gratuity of £6 19s and pay owing of 9s 2d. She also received a pension of £1 2s 11d week, however there is a note which records that she died in 1921 and asks for the pension to be payable to Maj. H A Anderson for administration.
