Pre War

Frederick William Dellow was born in 1895 in Anstey, nr Royston,  Herts, the son of William James and Maria Louisa Dellow and one of six children.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at High Street, Barkway, near The Bull public house and his father was working as a stockman on a farm. They remained in Barkway in 1911 and were then living at Mill House, Royston Road, at which time, 15 year old Frederick was working as a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Royston and served with the Royal Field Artillery as a Bombardier with the 49th Battery/40th Brigade and later as a Driver. He served in France from 29 August 1915 and at some point was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty under fire.

Frederick was killed in action on 26 August 1918, aged 23, and is buried in Morchies Australian Cemetery, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £16 10s and pay owing of £21 15s. She also received a dependant's pension. Although there is no record of the amount it is assumed an award was made as the card was altered when his mother died and the pension was transferred to his father.
