Walter was born in Walthamstow, London in 1887 to James E Middleton, an upholsterer, and Sarah nee ( ). On the 1891 Census Walter was living at Mount Pleasant Road, Walthamstow with his parents, elder brother James H and elder sister Alice G. Walter’s father died in 1893. His mother remarried in 1895 to Thomas W Stotter in Walthamstow. On the 1901 Census Walter was living at Brickfields, with his mother and stepfather. Walter married Grace Judd on 9 Oct 1909 in Little Amwell. A son Walter was born in 1910. On the 1911 Walter, coal carter, Grace, a shirt ironer and son Walter were living at 4 Portland Place Hertford Heath. There would be a further two children Thomas William (born 1911) and Grace (born 1914)
Wartime Service
Walter was enlisted as Private G/20352 in 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. No Service Record found for Walter. In 1917 18 (Eastern) division, of which 7th Sussex were a component unit, was posted to the Cambrai sector and on 20 Nov 1917 the 7th Sussex were detailed to attack hold the left Flank at Banteux which had been subject to a gas barrage from Livens Projectors. In this action Walter was killed in action on 20 Nov 1917.

War Gratuity of £6 and arrears of £4 5s 5d was paid to his widow Grace.
