Pre War
Henry James Dellar (sometimes known as Harry) was born in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire in 1888, the son of David and Ellen Dellar (nee Hobbs) and one of twelve children, although four died in infancy.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Elbrook, Ashwell, Herts, where his father was working as a cooper. They had moved to Station Road, Ashwell by 1901, and to High Street, Ashwell in 1911 at which time Henry was working as a domestic gardener.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford on 12 November 1915 and joined the Hertfordshire Regiment. He was sent to Halton Park, Tring for training and contracted an illness from which he died on 9 March 1916 at Aylesbury Hospital, without seeing active service.
He was 26 years old and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Ashwell.
Additional Information
A war gratuity was not admissible but his mother received his pay owing of £2 8s 3d 'for his father's benefit'. Request for a pension was refused as entitlement was not admitted.
