Pre War

Frederick was born in Harpenden in 1872 to William Dellar, agricultural labourer, and Eliza (nee Ealing).

On the 1881 Census the family were living at Pimlico Place Harpenden Common. On the 1901 Census Frederick is listed as a soldier and at his Mother’s home still at Pimlico Place.

Frederick had enlisted with the Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) on 2 Oct 1896 as Private 5595 stating his occupation as upholsterer and serving with them including for 6 years in India. He transferred to RAMC (Private 18814) in 1901 and served in South Africa, returning home on 23 Feb 1907 and completed his 12 year engagement in Oct 1908 having gained the South Africa Medal with clasps for South Africa and Transvaal. Following this he emigrated to Australia. Transvaal.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted in Australian Imperial Force at Lismore, New South Wales on 25 Aug 1914 being posted to 9 Battalion as Private 738.

He embarked on 2 Mar 1915 for Alexandria, Egypt arriving on 19 May 1915. He seems to have been seconded for transport duties at times during his service.

While on transit from Lemnos to Alexandria during the night of 31 Dec 1915 Frederick was found dead as result of a gunshot wound to the head (a soldier sharing the cabin slept through the shot) and after inquiry his death was declared ‘misadventure’.

He was buried at sea. He is remembered on the Memorial at Lone Pine, Gallipoli.
