Pre War
Walter was born in 1894, He was the second son of Joseph Dell and Ellen (nee Howard)of Northchurch, Herts.
Walter was serving in 2nd Battalion as the 1911 census has him at Blenheim Barracks Aldershot. His was a Drummer and was aged 16.
Wartime Service
As Walter was already in the Grenadier Guards in peace time as he went to France on 13 Aug 1914 with the original BEF (the contemptible little Army). He was wounded and died as a result from these wounds at Temp Military Hospital Lycee Button Paris.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs. E. Dell, Bank Cottage, Northchurch, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "TRULY MY HOPE IS EVEN IN THEE".
Brothers Albert served with 19 Manchesters and was killed in action 23 Apr 1917, Edwin Charles served with 4 Bedfords, was wounded in 1915 but survived the war.
War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £10 9s 11d paid to brother Albert.
