Wigginton Village Memorial

George Dell was born in 1876, in Wigginton, Herts, son of John Dell, a Wood Cutter (B 1839 in Wigginton) and Mary Ann Dell (B 1839 in Wigginton).


1881 Census records George aged 5, living with his parents, sisters Mary 16, Ellen 7, Louisa 3 and brother Fred 13, at The Old Brewhouse, Wigginton, Herts.


By 1891 George had left school and was working as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, brothers Joseph 19, Ernest 5, sisters Ellen 17, Louisa 14, Ann 9 and Elizabeth 8, at The Old Brewhouse, Church Row, Wigginton, Herts.


1901 Census records George aged 25, single, and working as a General labourer and boarding with Alfred and Annie Davis and their family at 45 Colmer Road, Streatham, London / Surrey. 


1911 Census records George still single and still boarding with the Davis family but they are now living at 53 Colmer Road and he is working as a Jobbing Gardener.


On the 23rd December 1914, George married Selina Louisa Coombes the daughter of James Coombes in St Andrews Church, Streatham, London / Surrey. It is believed they had one son Arthur John Dell.

Wartime Service

George Enlisted in Kingston-on-the-Thames, posted to the East Surrey Regiment with the Service No. 24323.


George was Killed in Action on 30th May 1917, he is buried in the CWGC Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery in France.


Additional Information

The value of his effects were £4-4s-6d, Pay Owing and £3, War Gratuity which went to his widow Selina. His wife applied for his medals in May 1927, her address at the time was Church Row, Wigginton, Tring, Herts.
