Herbert Sykes was born in Royston, Barnsley, Yorks on 15 December 1895, the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Sykes and baptised on 20 March 1901 at St Giles & St St Mary, Pontefract, Yorks.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 6 Chatburn Avenue, Tanshelf, Pontefract, Yorks, where his father was working as a coal hewer. They had moved to Grimethorpe, Barnsley, Yorks by 1911 and were living at 169 Rockingham Street, at which time his father was a greengrocer.
Wartime Service
Herbert enlisted in Doncaster and joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Driver with the Royal Field Artillery, 96th Brigade. No. 35394
He was said to have been accidentally killed (pension card)
He died on 22 May 1915, aged 19 and is buried at Heath Lane Cemetery, Hemel Hempstead.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs E Sykes, 31 Alexandra Rd, Adwick-le-Street, Nr. Doncaster, ordered his headstone inscription: "HE DIED FOR KING AND COUNTRY". His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 11s 3d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
