Albert Edward Mead was born in Kimpton in 1893, the son of George and Emily Mead.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at High Street, Kimpton where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1911 he was a lodger at the home of Henry and Elizabeth Thompson at 140 Hartley Road, Luton, Beds and was working as a general labourer.
He married Bertha Emily Matthews in 1918 in St Albans and her address on pension records was given as 70 Park Corner, St Albans, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Bedford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 7th Battalion in France from 26 July 1915 when they arrived in Boulogne sur Mer on board the SS Onward. [7th Btn on medal index cards].
The Battalion was heavily engaged in the Battles of the Somme, particularly the Battles of Albert, Bazentin and Thiepval in 1916.
At some point he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion and was killed in action on 2 July 1918, aged 25, during operations at Bouzincourt, near Albert. He is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £17 and pay owing of £1 19s 8d. She also received a pension of 13s 9d a week.
