Robert Hugh Meacock was born on 8 April 1889, the youngest son of John and Fanny Meacock (nee Cotching), and was baptised on 7 May 1889 in St Mary's Church, Northolt, Ealing Road, Ealing,, Middlesex.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 25 Windsor Road, Ealing. His father's profession was recorded as retired farmer, and they employed two servants. His parents had married in 1884 in Ealing and John had a sister Mary and brother John. His father died later the same year, aged 62, and on the 1901 Census Robert was living with his widowed mother, siblings and a servant, at 7 Harlington Road, Ealing where his mother was 'living on her own means'.
In April 1906, soon after his 17th birthday, Robert went to work for the London and County Bank in Berkhamsted. In 1909 London & County merged with the London & Westminster Bank (Now National Westminster known as NatWest Bank).
By the 1911 Census they had moved back to Windsor Road, Ealing and were living at No. 28, and employing a general servant. Robert was then 21 and was working as a bank clerk.
His mother died on 12 October 1911 and probate was granted to Caroline Halley (wife of Richard Henry Halley, with effects of £4694 6s 7d.
Wartime Service
In July 1915, Robert left his job as a bank clerk and obtained a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry. He served with them in France and died on 19 October 1916, aged 27, from wounds received in action. He is buried in Avesnes-le-Comte Communal Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His sister Mary received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £54 14s 10d. She also obtained probate of his estate in London on 1 January 1917 with effects of £510 12s 4d. His home address was given as 89 The Grove, Ealing, Middlesex.
