Pre War

Charles Samuel Swinscoe was born in 1885 in Great Parndon, Essex to George and Sarah Ann Swinscoe. On the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed mother at Star Hill, Newport, Essex and working as a butcher. At the time of enlistment  he was living at 94 Lupus Street, Victoria, London, She later lived at  10 Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 17 February 1916 in London but was not sent to France until 7 February 1917, serving with the Royal Army Service Corps. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 12 March 1918. He died at the 43th Casualty Clearing Station in France of influenza and bronchopneumonia the following year.

His mother received a war gratuity of £14 10s and pay owing of £23 9s 11d.
