Born on 26 Jul 1890 in Assam, India son of Gordon Herbert and Margaret Eliza (Balfour) Swinley of Glenavon, Newbury. Educated at the United Services College 1905-08, worked in London and then went to India. He was shipwrecked when the P and O liner S.S. Delhi ran aground on the North Africa coast in Nov 1911 but survived (along with the Princess Royal and her family). He was Acting British Vice-Consul in Marrakesh in Aug 1914 and returned home to enlist on the outbreak of war.
Wartime Service
Formerly Trooper 1113 2nd King Edward’s Horse, he obtained a commission in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in Dec 1914. Entered France on 21 May 1915 and was killed in action near Ypres.
Additional Information
United Services College, Westward Ho, Devon amalgamated with Imperial Service College in Windsor in 1912 and then moved to Haileybury College, Hertford Heath in 1942.
