Frederick William Swinger was born on 1 Jan 1897 (baptised 18 Apr 1897) in Shipdham, Norwich, Norfolk to Frederick Swinger and Ellen (nee Task).
On the 1901 Frederick was living with his mother and Ethel (born 1899) and Walter (born 1901) at Light Horseman Yard, 1, barrack Street, Norwich. His mother stated she was a soldier’s wife.
His mother died in 1905 and his father married Ada Emma Harvey in 1906.
On the 1911 Census the family of his father, a farm labourer, stepmother Ada, Frederick , farm labourer, and Walter were living at Thwaite St Mary, Ditchingham Bungay, Norfolk.
Frederick married Sarah Dora Crockett on 17 Jul 1917, at St John Timberhill with All Saints & St Michael At Thorn, Norwich.
Husband of Mrs. S. D. Borter (formerly Swinger), of 7, Clements Place, Akemon St., Tring, Herts.
Wartime Service
No Service record was found for Frederick who joined the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich as Private 5146.
He was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry as Private 250599 in the20th (Service) Battalion (Wearside). The 20th were part of 123 Brigade 41 Division and had been in France from May 1916, taking part in the Somme at the Battles of Flers-Courcelette ( ) , and Transloy 27 Sep). In 1917 theyy were moved to Ypres and took part in Messines (7-14 Jun) and Passchendaele at Pilkem (31 Jul-2 Aug), and Menin Road (20-25 Sep). In this last Battle Frederick was wounded in action and was taken to 37 Casualty Clearing Station and died there on 25 Sep 1917.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £9 10s and arrears of £2 5s 2d was paid to his widow.
