Pre War

He was born in Ridge, Hertfordshire and lived at “Horse Shoes” Hatfield Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire (1901 to 1911). His parents were John and Mary Ann McNair (nee Welch) and Joseph had a sister, Mildred - affectionately known as Millie, who, as pupil no 34, started attending Colney Heath School on 13th October 1905. The register has recorded her birthday as 8th July 1901, explaining why she is not shown on the 1901 census. Joseph was pupil no 17 in the school admissions register (starting 21st March 1904) and the register has recorded his birthday as 23rd June 1899. He left Colney Heath School on 19th June 1912. The Colney Heath School records indicate that Joseph may have joined the army direct from school.

Address later given as Cape Road, St Albans.
