Andrew Youngson Greig McLauchlan was born in Camden Town, London on 13 August 1895, the son of sea captain Andrew Youngson Grieg and Christina McLauchlan. On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses he was living with his family at 58 Empress Avenue, Ilford, Essex.
In December 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank and was working as a clerk in the Bishop’s Stortford branch when he left to join the army.
Wartime Service
He enlisted into the army in May 1915 and initially served as a Private in the 14th Btn London Regiment under Reg. No. 4887. He served in France from 7 October 1915.
He was commissioned into the Manchester Regiment on 25 September 1917 and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant on active service in France.
He was killed in action on 28 September 1918 by machine gun fire when they were advancing into the Couillet Valley.
Additional Information
Probate was granted on 5 November 1918 to his father Andrew Youngson Greig McLauchlan mariner with effects of £443 8s 10d. His father received a war gratuity of £16 and pay owing of £109 12s 3d and also, while living at 58 Empress Avenue, Ilford, Essex, ordered his headstone inscription: "THO' LOST TO SIGHT TO MEMORY DEAR".
