Edgar Albert Swannell was born in 1876 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, the son of John Thomas and Elizabeth Swannell and baptised there on 16 July 1876. [N.B. the baptismal record gives his name as Albert Edgar].
On the 1881 Census the family were living at 26 Knox Road, Wellingborough, where his father was working as a baker and confectioner. They remained there in 1891 with 15 year old Edgar then being named Albert Edgar and working as a baker's assistant with his father who was then being described as a master confectioner. Edgar remained living with his family at the same address in 1901 and at age 24 was described as a baker bread maker
He married Clara Evangeline Humphrey on 28 September 1910 at St Mary's Church, Steeple Bumpstead, Essex and on the 1911 Census the family were living at Hunton Bridge, Kings Langley, Abbots Langley where he was working as a baker. Their son Edgar William Edgar was born on 2 September that year and son Stanley Herbert in 1913.
On the 1912 Commercial Directory, Edgar was listed at Langleybury working as a Baker & Post Office employee. The 1914 Kelly's Directory also listed him at the Post Office, Langleybury, Kings Langley.
Wartime Service
He enlisted and served with the Army Service Corps, initially serving in Egypt from 5 August 1915, later being promoted to Sergeant and serving at the 41st Field Bakery, Dieppe.
He died at the Labour Hospital, Dieppe, on 6 January 1919 from pneumonia whilst on active service. He was aged 42 and is buried at Janval Cemetery, Dieppe. France.
Additional Information
His widow Clara obtained probate of his estate on 10 March 1919 at Northampton with effects of £105 8s 5d. She received a war gratuity of £23 and pay owing totalling £6 15s 6d (from two separate payments) as well as a pension of £1 7s 11d for herself and her two sons. She gave her address on pension records as 6 Agnes Road, Northampton.
