St Albans School Memorial

Son of the Rev. Canon John George and Elizabeth Deed, of Nuneaton Vicarage, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Born at St. Albans and educated at St Albans Grammar School and Greenwich College.
John was gazetted as 2nd Lieut. in the Royal Marines on the 1st of February 1894, promoted to Lieut. on the 1st of January 1895, and made Capt. on the 10th of October 1900. He served on H.M. ships Alexandria, Royal Arthur, Minotaur, Vulcan, and Suffolk between 1896 - 1905 when he retired and joined the Reserve of Officers. Subsequently, he went to British Columbia.
Wartime Service
On the outbreak of war John was asked to raise and command the 1st East Kootenay (Fernie) Contingent. He trained and commanded this until September 1914 when he received orders to return to England. On the 10th of October 1914 he rejoined his old corps at Deal and was posted to H.M.S. Formidable in November.
He was lost at sea on the 1st of January 1915 when the ship was torpedoed in the Channel.
