Pre War

William Albert Dedman was born on 5 Apr 1889 in Sawbridgeworth to William Dedman, a maltster, and Eleanor (nee Page) and was baptised there on 2 Jun 1889. He was the eldest son of 7 children. 


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Eleanor C (born 1888), William, Walter P (born 1891), Leonard F (born (1893), Cecil A (born 1896 and Doris S (born 1898 were living at New Street Sawbridgeworth. William father was a maltster’s foreman.


On the 1911 Census William was working as a Book Publisher's Clerk and living with his parents, Walter (a gas fitter), Leonard (grocery assistant), Cecil a (office boy) and Arthur (born 1902) at Anchor Cottages, Anchor Street, Bishop’s Stortford. 

Wartime Service

William initially enlisted about Dec 1915 as a Territorial Soldier as Private 5681, 28th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Artists Rifles). This was designated as an Officer Cadet Battalion, training 15,000 men of which 10 000 became Officers. He was commissioned from Cadet as 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) on 12 June 1916.  He was posted to 1/8th (Leeds Rifles) Battalion, West Yorkshire (Prince of Wales’ Own) Regiment. William probably went of France with his Battalion in January 1917. 8th Battalion was formed from 1/8 and 2/8 Battalions and became a part of 185 Brigade, 62 (West Riding) Division in Jan 1918.


He died on 4 February 1918 and is buried at Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £102 4s 8d. He left a will and administration was granted to his father in London on 6 July 1918, with effects of £373 1s 2d. His address was given as 26 Hockerill Street, Bishop's Stortford.
