Herbert was born in late 1894, the son of Walter and Jessie Dedman of Albury. His father was a farm labourer. By 1911, Herbert was also working as a farm labourer and living at Patmore Heath. He was very likely the cousin of Frederick and Oliver Dedman

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted in Bishops Stortford, into the Bedfordshires ( 201122), and then later was transferred to the Essex Regt (3522), probably in May 1915. He was a volunteer, maybe a Territorial, and left Devonport for Gallipoli in July 1915. He landed at
