Edwin Ayers McConnochie was born 1896 in Liscard, Cheshire to Frank McConnochie, clerk, and Elizabeth (nee Ayers).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Frances (born 1889), Elsie born 1890), Doris (born 1894) and Edwin were living at 13, Conchy Bank Road, Liscard, Wallasey.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Frances, Elsie (both teachers) Doris and Edwin were living at 10, Lonsboro Road, Wallasey.


His father Frank McConnochie, later lived at The School House, Marsworth, Tring, Herts. 

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Edwin. From others records it would seem that he enlisted in the 18th (Service) Battalion (2nd City) of the Kings (Liverpool Regiment)  as it was being formed in Sep 1914. His service number was 16253 in the block of numbers (16152 to 17259) reserved for 18th Battalion). Following training and equipment this pals Battalion became part of 89 Brigade 30 Division on 30 Apr 1915 and deployed to France in Nov 1915 landing at Boulogne. It was present for the Battle of the Somme for Albert (1-13 Jul) and Le Transloy (1-18 Oct) in 1916. 


Edwin volunteered to join the Tank Corps as it was expanded as Gunner 75902 in Dec 1915, his service number was in a block issued between 22 Dec (75000) & 31 Dec (75999) and was posted to D Battalion, Tank Corps. He may have taken part in the Battles of Arras (Apr 1917) and 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele). He was killed in action on 22 Aug 1917.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £14 and arrears of £20 9s 9d was paid to his father.
