Andrew Best McBride was born on 16 June 1895 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of John and Mary McBride, and baptised on 14 August 1895 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of five children although his older brother John died in 1896 at the age of two.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 93 High Street, Berkhamsted where his father's occupation was given as physician and surgeon. They remained at the same address in 1911 and employed a governess and two domestic servants.
He was educated at Berkhamsted School where he was a corporal in the cadet corps, and from 9 October 1913 at King's College, University of London as a medical student. He completed his first professional examinations in medicine by 1914.
His parents later lived at Falkland House, Kings Road, Berkhamsted.
Wartime Service
He was gazetted Lieutenant with the Bedfordshire Regiment (Territorial Force) in September 1914 and promoted to Captain by 1 June 1916, holding the appointment of musketry instructor to an infantry brigade. He served in France from 18 November 1917.
He was awarded the Military Cross for gallant and distinguished services in action (although the circumstances are unknown).
He was killed in action(*1) on 24 April 1918, aged 22, at Cachy, Somme, Picardie, France and is buried in Longeau British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His father was granted probate of his estate in London on 29 November 1918 with effects of £331 13s 8d. He received pay owing of £211 6s 11d.
