Pre War

William Dean was born in 1893 in Chesham, Bucks, the son of Arthur and Mary Ann Dean and one of twelve children, although two died in infancy. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Bank, Bovingdon, Herts, where his father was working as a hay binder. His parents remained in Bovingdon in 1911 but William was not listed with them.


He married Susan Violet Thorn in early 1916 in Berkhamsted and they lived at New Road, Northchurch, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

William initially enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment (reg. no. 26373) later transferring to the 10th Battalion, Worcester Regiment.


He was killed in action on 8 September 1916 and is buried at the Berks Cemetery Extension, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 14s 1d. She also received a pension of 13s 9d a week. 


His brother Reuben served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 7 November 1914. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
