William Arthur Dean was born in Berkhamsted, Herts in 1887, the son of Joseph and Eliza Dean, and baptised there on 25 December 1887. He was baptised as William Arthur Dean, but his birth was registered as Arthur Dean and he seems to have been known as Arthur on census returns.  He was one of eight children.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Gravel Path, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a carpenter. They remained there in 1901 at which time Arthur was working as a newsagents boy. In 1911 Arthur remained living in the family home at Gravel Path and was working as a painter for a chemical manufacturer. 


He married Nellie Maud Rance in Berkhamsted in 1913 and they lived at 60 High Street, Berkhamsted, Herts

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Berkhamsted and served with the 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. On military records he seems have used the name William Arthur.


William Arthur Dean was killed in action and death was presumed on or since 17 February 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His widow received a pension of 13s 9d a week.  She also received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of 13s 11d.
