Pre War

John Maylam was born on 7 September 1884 in Saltwood, Hythe, Kent to John and Mary Ann Mayham. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Lympne, Kent. He enlisted for 12 years in the Royal Navy from 7 September 1902, served on several ships and on the 1911 Census he was stationed in the Mediterranean.  In 1916 he married Elizabeth Sarah Aylett in St Martin, London.

Wartime Service

After his initial enlistment of 12 years, he continued to serve and progressed to the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class on 5 March 1913 later serving on HMS Dido from 26 November 1916. He died of hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body, usually caused by a brain tumour or stroke), on 1 November 1917 at Samford, Suffolk.

His wife, Mrs E S Maylam of 2 Bartholomew Rd, New Town, Bishop's Stortford ordered his headstone Inscription: "GONE FROM SIGHT TO MEMORY DEAR".
