Pre War

John William Maunsell was born on 4 Dec 1889 in Co. Wicklow, Ireland,  son of Col. Archibald John Stephens and Arabella Augusta Mary (Boyce) Maunsell.


He was educated at the United Services College 1905. He became a tea and rubber planter in Ceylon and then went to Australia.


He lived with his wife Mildred Maunsell, in  Kooringa, South Australia and gave his next of kin as his father, Lt Col A J S Maunsell, Warwick Depot, Warwick, England.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 13 Mar 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 6 Mar 1916.


He embarked with the 5th Bn. on 3 Jul 1916 and arrived at Devonport on 2 Sep 1916 and entered France on 12 Dec 1916.


He was promoted Lieutenant on 24 Mar 1917 and suffered a gun-shot wound to the left wrist at Ypres on 20 Sep 1917 and was treated at the 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth from which he recovered. He was killed in action on 9 August 1918..

Additional Information

United Services College, Westward Ho, Devon amalgamated with Imperial Service College in Windsor in 1912 and then moved to Haileybury College, Hertford Heath in 1942.
