Born on 8 Aug 1887 and baptised in Ponder’s End on 9 Sep 1887 son of James Thomas and Gertrude Matthews and living in 2 Mostyn Villas, Whitley Road, Hoddesdon in 1901 and later in 11 Hertford Road, Hoddesdon.

Wartime Service

He was in the Navy serving on Submarine C. 36 in 1911. He died when his submarine E4 collided with her sister submarine E41 during exercises off Harwich in the North Sea. All hands (about 30) were lost on E4 and only 14 survived from E41.

Brother of Gunner Herbert George Matthews who was killed in action on 24 Sep 1918 and whois also commemorated on these memorials.
