Pre War

Frederick Dean was born in 1887 to Frederick Dean, labourer, and Mary (nee Darvill).

On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Jane (born 1888), James (born 1889), Frederick and Susan (born 1890) were living at North Cottages, Caddington.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, James (Butcher’s Assistant), Frederick (newsboy), Susan, Daniel (born 1892(, Annie (born 1894), Sarah (born 1896), Henry (born 1898) and Mary (born 1900) were living at Chapel Lane, Markyate,

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Susan, Daniel, Henry, Mary and Henry George (born 1902) were ling at 32, Hibbert Road, Luton. Mother, Susan, Daniel and Annie were all straw hat Machinists.

Wartime Service

Frederick was called from Reserve for service on 25 Mar 1916 and was posted to No 1 Depot Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 7825, (Changed to 282825 at a date unknown, he gave his address as 44 Vernon Road, Luton, and occupation Straw Hat machinist).  Frederick also stated that he had already served as Gunner 22029 in 1913. On 5 Apr 1916.he was posted to Heavy Depot RGA and on 17 Apr 1916 to No 2 Depot RGA.


He was posted to Base Depot RGA in France on 22 Apr 1916. He was posted back to No 2 Depot on 28 Apr suffering with Phthisis (Tuberculosis) and was discharged as no longer fit for service on 29 May 1916. He was treated at 3 London General Hospital for Tubercole of Lung and died there on 6 Aug 1916. Fredrick was buried in Wandsworth on 9 Aug 1916. Some records show a later Servive Number of 282825.

Additional Information

Frederick was ruled inadmissible for War Gratuity, arrears of £1 was paid to his father.
