Pre War

Charles Thomas Mashford(*2) was born in 1899 in Northchurch, nr Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of John  and Alice Mashford (nee Smith).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 16 New Road, Northchurch and his father was working as a coachbuilder's labourer. By 1911 they had moved to 3 Eddy Street, Berkhamsted at which time Charles (Charlie) was a 12 year old schoolboy.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted in Watford and initially joined the  Royal Fusiliers later being  posted to the 2nd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers).


He was killed in action on 24 April 1918 and is interred in Hangard Wood Cemetery near Villers- Bretonneaux, Somme.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £5 11s. She also received a pension of seven shillings a week. 


N.B. Roll of Honour has date of death as 1916.
