Son of Elisha and the late Emma (nee WARD) MARTIN; husband of Ada (nee DUCK) MARTIN of Watford.

His parents married 3 March 1869 at St Mary Magdelene, Bermondsey, London.  Emma died 1903 in the Camberwell, London, district aged 60, and was buried 12 September in Camberwell Old Cemetery; Elisha died 1916 in the Camberwell district aged 79, and was buried 31 October, also in Camberwell Old Cemetery

Charles was born 1873 in Walworth, Surrey, and baptised 28 November 1877 at St Peter’s, Camden, London.  He married 21 November 1900 at St Mary the Virgin, Marlborough, Wilts; they had three children.  Ada remarried 1930 in the Watford district to Jacob THURLOW and died 1962 in the Watford district aged 90.

On the 1881 Census, a scholar aged 7 he lived in Bermondsey, with his parents and six siblings.  On the 1891 Census, a hair dresser aged 17 he still lived in Bermondsey, with his parents and six siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a hair dresser aged 28 he lived in Little Stanmore, Middx, with his wife and no children.  On the 1911 Census, a barber aged 38 he lived in London S.E., with his wife and three children.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Woolwich, London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 27 July 1915, and died at sea aboard H.S. Dunluce Castle 16 April 1916.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Charles’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
