His brother, Phillip Marshall, died of wounds on the 7th March 1915 in Belgium, whilst serving with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.


Herbert and his brother Phillip are also commemorated on the family headstone in Royston Church Additional Burial Ground. Their inscription reads:

ALSO OF PHILIP EIGHTH SON OF THE ABOVE [Steven and Elizabeth Marshall] WHO WAS KILLED IN FRANCE MARCH 7TH 1915. AGED 28 YEARS.

AND OF HERBERT FOURTH SON OF THE ABOVE WHO DIED OF WOUNDS IN FRANCE JUNE 18TH 1915. AGE 39 YEARS.
