Pre War

Son of George Marshall and Emma (nee Meadows) of ‘Bailiffs Cottage’, Greenwood, Hadley Wood.

He was living with parents up and till 1912, when he emigrated to Canada. It would appear that he took up residence in Ontario and worked as a farm labourer.

His medical records show that he was a heavy smoker, but was teetotal.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in the Canadian army on 14 Sep 1914, on a pay rate of $C15 per month which he had paid to his father.

He was promoted LCPL 10 Jan 1916 and killed in action on 2 Jun 1916 during an attack south East of Zillebeke.

Additional Information

Back pay of $C72.77 sent to England. Not entitled to a gratuity.

His mother, Mrs E Marshall, Greenwood, Hadley Wood, Barnet, Herts, ordered his headstone inscription, which reads: "OUR BRAVE LAD GIVE HIS LIFE FOR FREEDOM PEACE PERFECT PEACE".
