Sidney MARSH was born in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, in March 1892, his Baptism record gives date of birth as 11th March, other records give 4th March 1892, son of Daniel George Marsh (known as George) a Railway Goods Porter and Elizabeth Ann Marsh (nee Plumb). The youngest of their three children. His parents were married at St Pauls Church, Cambridge, Cambs, on 24th December 1887. He was Baptised on 17th April 1892, in Aldbury, Herts.
1901 Census records Sidney aged 9, living with his parents, and sisters, Alice (12) and Ethel (11), at Railway Cottages, Albury, Herts.
In July 1906, aged 14, he left school and started work as a Telegraph Boy for the North Western Railway Company at Tring Station.
1911 Census, Sidney (19), is working as a Tramway Conductor in Darlington, living with his Uncle and Aunt, John and Elizabeth Plumb and their family at, 17 Milton Street Darlington, Durham. In September 1911, aged 19, he emigrated to Australia with his uncle George Plumb.
Wartime Service
Sidney enlisted in July 1915, aged 23, giving his occupation as a Farmer, and his address as Wongan Hill, Wongan-Ballidu, Western Australia, posted to No. 18 Depot and issued with the service No. 3409. On completion of his training, Sidney embarked for Alexandria, Egypt, and from there he sailed for Marseilles, France, arriving on 5th April 1916.
On 2nd May 1916, he was transferred to the 3rd Company, Australian Machine Gun Corps (AIF). Sidney was wounded twice in action.
He was Killed in Action on 21st September 1917, aged 25, at Nonne Bosscheh (‘t Nonnebos) in Belgium, which was taken from the Germans the previous day. He has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium to the missing. Panel 31.
