Pre War

Born on 25 Jul 1878 and baptised on 26 Sep 1878 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire son of John and Mary Elizabeth (Gretton) Marsden of 29 Avondale Road, Chesterfield. Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1890-93. He was unmarried.

Wartime Service

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in Oct 1914 and was promoted Captain in 1915. He served in Ireland during the Sein Fein rebellion and then entered France in Feb 1917. He was awarded the MC “for showing fine handling of his command during the advance and, by anticipating a movement of the enemy, was able to kill one enemy and capture nine unwounded and one wounded prisoners at the attack on Jeancourt on 31 Mar 1917.” He served as the Brigade Transport Officer and was killed in action at Hargicourt.
