Pre War
William Marriott was born in 1899 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, the son of James and Louisa Marriott and one of eight children.
The family were living in Green Lane, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Herts on the 1901 Census, when his father was Horseman on a Farm. They remained in Green Lane, Bovingdon at the time of the 1911 Census, at which time William, aged 11, was at school.
The 1939 Register lists his parents living at No. 6 Green Lane, Bovingdon.
Wartime Service
William enlisted at Hertford and joined The Buffs (East Kent Regiment).
He was killed in action in the final advance on Artois. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vis En Artois Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £8 3s 10d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week. Brother of Private George Marriott who was killed in action on 31 Jul 1917 and who is also named on the Bovingdon Memorials.
