Pre War

Thomas Margrave was born in Berkhamsted in 1877, the son of Thomas and Eliza Margrave and baptised on 24 June 1877 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of thirteen children, although six died in infancy and one at age 11 years.


On the 1881 Census the family were living at Berkhamsted where his father was working as a boot maker. They remained in Berkhamsted in 1891, then living in the High Street. 


Thomas married Elizabeth Susanna Doughty on 5 September 1900 in Wood Norton, Norfolk and on the 1901 Census they were living at 28 Victoria Road, Berkhamsted, where he was working as a mechanical engineer. They had a son Thomas Eric in 1901 and remained at the same address in 1911. Their son Albert was born in early 1904 but sadly died the following year.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Woolwich, London and joined the 11th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery as a Fitter Staff Sergeant, serving in France from 3 April 1915. 


Thomas was killed in action on 28 December 1917 and is buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Boezinge (Boezinghe), Belgium. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £18 10s and pay owing of £18 14s 6d. She also received a pension of £17s 6d a week, she ordered his headstone inscription, while living at 7 Holliday Street, Gt Berkhamsted, Herts., it reads "UNTIL THE DAWN".  She obtained probate of his estate on 30 January 1920 with effects of £186 16s.
