Pre War

Gilbert Margrave was born in 1887 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of William and Jane Margrave, and baptised on 10 July 1887 at Great Berkhamsted.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Castle Street, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a carpenter. They remained at the same address on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, then living at No. 6 Castle Street, at which time Gilbert was working as a chemical machinist. His father was then described as an invalid.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in served in Bedford and joined the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, serving in France from 26 July 1915 when the Battalion left from Felixstowe on S S Onward en route to Boulogne sur Mer.

He was listed as missing and believed to have been killed in action during the Battle of Bazentin, part of the Battle of the Somme. His death was presumed on or after 14 July 1916, aged 29 (although the medal index card suggests he died of wounds).  He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £2 9s 2d. (following his father's death in 1919, aged 65).  Pension cards exist which suggest his mother would have received a pension, although the amount is not shown.
