Pre War

Arthur Cripps was born ion 2 May 1897 in Hemel Hempstead, the son of John and Elizabeth Cripps, and baptised there on 2 June 1897. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Round House, Gade Bridge Lane, where his father was working as a Game Keeper.  By 1911 they had moved to The Meadows, Potten End, Great Berkhampsted.  They later lived at 15 Frithsden, Hemel Hempstead, Herts. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hemel Hempstead and served with the 2nd Battalion, Northants Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 16 August 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £4 12s 8d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
