Reginald Charles Sutton was born in Morchard Bishop, Devon, on 9 November 1897, son of Edward Sutton from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, and Mary Sutton, (nee Burrow) of Morchard Bishop, Devon. One of nine children.


1901 Census records Reginald aged 3, living with his parents, sister Nellie (5), brother’s Fred (2) and Jack (5 months) in, Church Street, Morchard Bishop, Devon.


Between 1901 and 1903, the family moved from Morchard Bishop, to Borehamwood, in Hertfordshire.


1911 Census records Reginald aged 13, at school, living with his parents, 4, brothers and 4, sisters at, 9 Malden Road, Borehamwood, Herts.

Wartime Service

Reginald enlisted at Watford, Herts, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 31782.


He died at No.41 Casualty Clearing Station, Duisans, France, on 12, April 1917, of wounds received in action. It is believed he was wounded at The First Battle of The Scarp (9th - 14th April 1917), aged 20. 

Additional Information

His Dependents Pension Record card records Mrs. Polly Sutton, of 6 Council Cottages, Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Herts, mother, received a Dependents Pension of 6/7, a week for life. His mother’s name was Mary, he had a sister by the name of Polly ? His effects of £3-14s-8d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £3, went to his father Charles Sutton.
