Pre War

John Everard Churchill was born in 1897 in Isleham, Cambs to Charles George & Marian Churchill Macvicker. He was educated at Aldenham, where he played First XI cricket. He also attended London University.

Wartime Service

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on the General list 8 Mar 1917.


Joined RFC 8 Oct 1916 and underwent training at Denham & Oxford until Jun 1917. During this time he obtained his flying licence at Military School, Ruislip 25 March 1917. Posting to 49 Sqn. from Jun to Sep 1917 and then to 61 (Home Defence) Sqn in Sep 17. Another transfer to France in May 1918 saw him with 60 Sqn.  Initially he was reported Missing after a first light patrol when his Flight of 3 aircraft attacked a Larger Enemy Patrol.


His record shows the many varied aircraft he flew during his career including Avro, Be2c, 202A, BE12 RE 8, Martinsyde Elephant, Sopwith Pup, and SE5A.

Additional Information

His younger brother Evelyn R C MacVicker served in Royal Navy from 1917 and retired as in the rank of Commander. His mother, Mrs M C MacVicker of Street, Somerset, ordered his headstone inscription: “JACK, SON OF C.G. MacVICKER STREET, SOMERSET I THANK MY GOD UPON EVERY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU"
