Pre War

Herbert Macrow was born on 18 July 1888 in Eltham, Kent , the youngest son of  Benjamin and Maria Macrow. He was baptised on 19 August 1888 at St John the Baptist, Eltham.


He was employed by Mr Narbeth [a draper and milliner] for seven years, subsequently going to Messrs Sainsbury's at Lewisham and afterwards to Messrs Chiesman, before joining up.


On the 1911 Census, he was living with his parents at 13 Sherard Road, Eltham and working as a linoleum layer. He married Ethel Mary Elliot in Eltham on 24 March 1913 and gave his occupation as carpet planner.  They had two children, Herbert and Mary.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 12 April 1915 and served with the London Regiment,  going to France on 12 August 1915.  He took part in the Battle of Loos in September and was killed in action near the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 27 December 1915. 

Additional Information

His widow, Ethel Mary received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 15s. She also received a pension of 18 s 6d a week from 17 July 1916.
