Born on 26 Dec 1881 in Ryde, Isle of Wight son of Maj. Gen. Henry J. and Frances (Clarkson) Maclean. Educated at Haileybury College 1895-1900 and qualified in Medicine in 1906 from St Thomas’ Hospital, London.

Wartime Service

Commissioned Lieutenant R.A.M.C. on 19 Aug 1914 and was promoted Captain in Aug 1915. M.C. awarded at Neuve Chapelle “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He tended and dressed the wounded continuously throughout the operations under very heavy fire, displaying great courage and determination.” London Gazette 23 Jun 1915. Bar to the M.C. awarded at the Somme 21 Dec 1916. D.S.O. awarded at Ypres “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in clearing the wounded. He took his stretcher-bearers well in advance of our forward positions and behaved with the most exemplary courage and devotion throughout, sparing no effort to collect the wounded men. After his battalion was relieved he continued to work under the heaviest fire for another twenty-four hours, and was severely wounded on his way back after all the cases had been cleared. He set a splendid example of energy and devotion to duty.” 26 Sep 1917. He died of wounds as a prisoner in a German hospital having been reported missing on 24 Mar.

Additional Information

Brother of Lieutenant Alec Clarkson Maclean who was killed in action only five days later on 9 April 1918 and is also commemorated on these memorials. Obituary B.M.J. 8 Jun 1918.
