Pre War

Ernest Alexander was born in Potters Bar on 9 Aug 1885 (baptised 11 Oct 1885, St Johns, Potters Bar) to John Mackenzie, a railway clerk, and Emma (nee Seaton). They were living at Spencer Villas.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents Walter T (a railway clerk born 1881), Ernest (a railway clerk), Helen M (born 18880, Emma (born 1890 and Danny Frances, domestic servant were recorded at High Road, South Mimms.


Ernest married Martha Hannah Grooskopf in 1912.


On the 1911 Census Ernest and Martha were living at 3, Morven Villas, South Mimms Potters Bar. There would a son Norman Alexander Mackenzie born 22 Jun 1913. 


Wartime Service

Ernest was enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on 22 Aug 1916. As 45111 Air Mechanic Class II he was posted to No 2 Balloon Squadron. He went to France on 9 Nov 1917 returning to UK on 7 Jan 1918.


Ernest died on 16 May 1918 at Whipps Cross Hospital from a perforated Duodenal Ulcer.


Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 9s and arrears of 10 12s 9d was paid to his widow.
